Africa Environmental Watch

Africa Environmental Watch (AEW) is a Liberian NGO run by doctors and professionals focused on education and raising awareness regarding the many environmental challenges faced by the continent of Africa, with a specific focus on Western Africa and Liberia. The mission of the AEW is to create a safe, resilient and sustainable environment for Africa and its diaspora, fostering an environmentally-friendly future for the continent and its diverse population. An example of a project conducted by the AEW is their Environmental Awareness and Education program, which educates people about climate change, clean water, and land degradation through global video campaigns and marketing efforts.

Green Advocates International

Green Advocates International (GAI) is a Liberian-based non-profit organization focused on public interest law and environmental and human rights. GAI works on a variety of issues through legal aid, consultation, and support for victims of environmental and human rights violations. The organization develops context-specific programs to empower underprivileged communities to participate in decision-making processes in the management of Liberia’s natural resources and its economy. Green Advocates also helps draft and enact appropriate policies and legislations to strengthen the enforcement of existing environmental and human rights standards.

Liberian Youth for Climate Actions

The Liberian Youth for Climate Actions (LYCA) is a youth-led non-profit organization that works with local communities to address the issues of climate change in Liberia and Africa. The goal of the organization is to promote sustainability and educate the community about environmental issues through volunteerism and on-the-ground action. To raise general awareness about the climate crisis, the organization created a platform that allows users to share stories and solutions to climate change. LYCA hopes to encourage youth to be part of the solution in the future by hosting training workshops teaching participants about the roles that climate activists play in the community and in politics. The organization has also created working groups specialized in various areas including biological diversity, disaster risk reduction, climate entrepreneurship, and youth inclusion.

Save My Future Foundation

The Save My Future Foundation (SAMFU) was established in 1987 to protect Liberia’s natural resources and cultural heritage. The organization’s mission is to promote sustainable management of the country’s natural resources through effective partnerships with other environmental organizations, local communities, and the government. SAMFU works to empower communities negatively affected by natural resource extraction, such as logging and large scale plantations, and participate in the management process of these resources. The organization educates the community about the impacts of these operations and how to sustainably use resources. The SAMFU Foundation also implements a turtle conservation program to protect sea turtles and their nesting beach in Liberia, while also encouraging community participation in these conservation efforts.

Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia

As Liberia’s oldest conservation organization, the Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL) encourages the sustainable use of natural resources and educates Liberians about the importance of their forests. The organization seeks to ensure that biodiversity is effectively managed to promote a healthy environment. SCNL implements various projects to increase alternative livelihoods for forest communities through small loans that can help children attend school and allow families to have bigger farms. The organization also works to heighten public awareness of cultural values of natural resources through sustainable tourism tours.

Youth Climate Change Initiative – Liberia

Youth Climate Change Initiative – Liberia (YCCI-Liberia) is a youth-led non-governmental institution that aims at combating Climate Change and reducing its effects in Liberia and the world at large. YCCI-Liberia links their climate change goals with key development challenges, such as poverty alleviation, agriculture, gender, health, education, economic growth, urbanization and migrations, and governance. As an organization, they aim to develop the capacity of young people as well as strengthening partnerships amongst youths in Liberia, primarily, and Africa at large.
