Reef Check Indonesia Foundation was founded in 2005 by Reef Check International— the world’s largest coral reef conservation network with programs in over 90 countries. The initiative conserves and manages coastal and marine ecosystems to inspire locals to further develop coastal community well-being. Their work includes coral bleaching monitoring, training stakeholders, and enhancing community capability to enforce the teachings of Reef Check.

Yayasan IDEP (Indonesian Development of Education and Permaculture)

The Yayasan Indonesian Development of Education and Permaculture (IDEP) was founded almost two decades ago and provides Indonesian communities with training, local programs, and media on permaculture, freshwater resiliency, and disaster risk reduction. Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI)

The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) is the largest environmental movement organization in Indonesia, with 487 members from non-government organizations and nature-loving organizations, as well as 203 individual members spread across 28 provinces in Indonesia.

WALHI has actively encouraged efforts to save and restore the environment in Indonesia. WALHI works towards social transformation, people’s sovereignty, sustainability of life and livelihoods, and the defense of Indonesia’s natural world and local communities from injustice.

Hutan Itu works towards creating a movement to develop the national identity of the people of Indonesia around forests. By encouraging awareness and collaborating with people across Indonesia, they want to take tangible actions to safeguard and protect forests.

In their first year, they managed to reduce plastic bag usage by 8,233,930 units and collect funds from consumers to clean 4 major cities in Indonesia. To attain their vision of a plastic free Indonesia, they are working along with organizations like change.org, Earth Hour Indonesia, The Body Shop and more.

North Bali Reef Conservation

North Bali Reef Conservation is a Non-Governmental Organization and volunteering program based in the small fishing village of Tianyar on the North East coast of Bali. Previous threats from coral harvesting and boat anchoring, as well as current threats from marine pollution, have resulted in Tianyar’s reef urgently needing help! North Bali Reef Conservation was founded in 2017 with the aim of working with local communities and international volunteers, to restore and conserve the coral reefs of Tianyar. This organization runs activities that include constructing and deploying artificial reef structures, recycling community plastic, protecting turtle nests/hatchlings and running environmental education classes for Tianyar’s local school children

Borneo Nature Foundation

The Borneo Nature Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the biodiversity of Borneo, Indonesia through community focused conservation efforts, as well as through research and education projects. While their main focus is in Indonesia, they have offices in Spain, France, and the U.K., to further support their efforts. The organization has been dedicated to rainforest conservation for over 20 years, and partners with local stakeholders to implement an array of conservation strategies. While the organization itself was created in 2016, it emerged from the 1999 organization Orangutan Tropical Peatland Project (OuTrop), an organization dedicated to raising awareness of orangutan conservation. In 2020, the Borneo Nature Foundation won the UpLink Trillion Trees Challenge, and  the People’s Choice Award at the World Economics Forum. Through rainforest rehabilitation, fire fighting and prevention, and habitat protection, the Borneo Nature Foundation works to preserve biodiversity.

The Wisnu Foundation is a nonprofit organization which strives to eliminate the issue of waste produced by tourism industries. Since 1999, the Wisnu Foundation has focused on managing the environment and empowering surrounding communities to do their part in keeping Bali clean.

Gili Eco Trust

Working on projects ranging from marine conservation to sustainable eco-tourism, the Gili Ecotrust encompasses a multidisciplinary approach to coral reef conservation on the island of Gili Trawangan. This NGO was established in 2002 in response to the destructive fishing practices that were devastating marine ecosystems on the island. Since then the Gili Ecotrust has expanded its horizons from marine conservation to waste management, ecotourism, and the construction of artificial reefs using biorock.
