Acción Climática

Acción Climática is a non-profit organization that promotes the integration of climate change solutions and related strategies in businesses, communities, and governments. It exists as a green network space that allows participatory organizations to learn from and collaborate with each other in a sustainable capacity. By engaging in this way, the organizations are able to expand via sustainable development; this advances a healthier environment as well as strengthened business structures. One of their most innovative programs is their Climate Plan, which provides a Climate Diagnosis Questionnaire for companies to use in diagnosing the effectiveness of their own work in sustainability. Upon completion, Acción Climática provides a tailored set of recommendations for the company to use going forward as they strive to contribute to a greener future. Their work extends from Colombia to Chile, Peru, and Mexico.

Cámara Verde de Comercio

As the first Green Chamber of Commerce in Latin-America, Colombia Green Chamber connects, strengthens and gives continuous support to companies (with a focus on green startups & SMEs), organizations and people committed to social and environmental wellbeing. Through its green business networks and value chains the Green Chamber generates a collaborative system of transparent and fair economy where companies promote social development and harmony with their natural environment.

Initiative 20x20 (World Resources Institute)

Initiative 20×20 is the world’s leading land conservation effort under the World Resources Institute, working specifically in Latin America and the Caribbean. Their goal is to procure 50 million hectares, of the 300 million degraded, of farm, forest, and pasture landscapes land to restore by 2030.  The initiative also looks to reduce the 58% of Latin America’s carbon emissions that come from land misuse.  Initiative 20×20 was formed at COP 20 in Lima, Peru, in 2014. These six key work areas were established: reforestation, sustainable low-carbon agriculture, avoided degradation and deforestation, sustainable management of grasslands, agroforestry, and silvopasture.  These practices collectively support the goal of conserving land and decarbonizing Latin America.

National Organizations

Barranquilla+20

Barranquilla+20 is a youth-led organization in Colombia that has spearheaded initiatives in the climate change, water, biodiversity, and equity sectors. They have contributed to the establishment of environmental policies on regional, national and environmental sectors through educational projects and environmental activism. Their Guardianes Bocas de Cenizas Project trained children and adolescents living near the mouth of the Magdalena river in the conservation of oceans and rivers. On the national scale, they developed the Low Carbon Schools initiative, which engages students and their communities across Colombia in sustainable development solutions. They have also held multiple conferences and Youth Climate Change models, preparing the next generation of climate changemakers.

CEID Center for Sustainable Development Studies

Founded in 2003, the Center for Sustainable Development Studies (CEID) Colombia is a non-profit organization with a team of experts in law, sustainable development, climate change, and socio-environmental issues. CEID is committed to leading research programs in Colombia and globally, disseminating knowledge, and building capacity within corporations, public institutions, and civil society on topics related to the environment and sustainable development, creating a pathway towards a more harmonious relationship between economic growth and environmental sustainability. CEID’s work includes projects and initiatives to reduce methane emissions, regularly attending national and international conferences, and providing consulting services on sustainable developments.

Cempre

Cempre is a Colombian organization that focuses on recycling and encourages people to think about the circular economy. They coordinate redesign, reuse, and recycling initiatives between the national government, the private sector, communities, professional organizations, and other groups. Additionally, they work to increase the cultural value of recycling with programs like Recycling has Value Bogotá, begun in 2022 to increase the proportion of city waste managed by professional recycling organizations. Cempre has also cooperated with other organizations and companies to create the Pact for Plastic, wherein they pledge to eliminate unnecessary plastic. Their other projects range from community education to public policy and environmental cleanups.

Fundación Humedales Bogotá

The Fundación Humedales Bogotá is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating about the importance of the Bogotá wetlands and highlighting their constant threats. They advocate for participatory environmental management to the communities of Bogotá. Through inclusive events, they promote awareness, training and formulate strategies that provide guidelines to better understand the conservation of wetlands. Much of the work they do revolves around improving the public’s knowledge of environmental conservation and biology-centered topics.

Fundación Natura

Natura, founded in 1986, is a leader in the conservation and restoration of many preserved lands in Colombia. The organization involves community members in restoration efforts at each region through introductory training and detailed end goals. Natura also catalogues species found in preserved areas to monitor and analyze their biodiversity and species richness. Yearly projects have also involved aiding fishing communities to capture responsibly and properly maintain influential fish populations and their habitats. The organization continues to work in partnership with region locals and government representatives to successfully manage natural resources and conserve Colombia’s biodiversity.

Fundación Omacha

The Omacha Foundation works to create strategies that revolve around the conservation and sustainable usage of aquatic ecosystems in communities. Much of their work revolves around teaching those communities about sustainable practices and conducting research of different biomes. The Omacha Foundation carries out community projects that allow students and professionals to participate in specific research, and thus gaining hands-on experience in field research. In addition, the organization conducts conservation-focused projects and events to raise awareness in their local communities about the ecological importance of resources.

Fundación Río Urbano

Founded in 2003 Fundación Río Urbano promotes the conservation and proper use of rivers and other bodies of water near human habitation, especially in urban environments, where they are more susceptible to contamination. They work to accomplish this on several levels, from local community education and cleanups to scientific studies, urban planning, and environmental engineering. They even design environmentally friendly buildings, and  issued an Environmental Concept for the Gran Colombiano District Educational Center. Although they frequently focus on the local Bogotá River, one of the most polluted waterways in the world, Fundación Río Urbano is working to organize chapters throughout Colombia and beyond.

RENAF

Red Nacional de Agricultura Familiar, RENAF for short,  is a network that works on strengthening familiar agriculture within Colombia, by aiding farmers, as well as enabling them to market their goods profitably and sustainably. RENAF especially focuses on underprivileged groups such as the indigenous communities and works with them to establish a stable income. This organization is an alliance of many NGOs geared towards familiar agriculture and unites them to form a strong network of sustainable producers.

Movimiento Ambientalista Colombiano

The Colombian Environmental Movement is an organization that promotes the preservation and protection of the environment through proper management of renewable and non-renewable resources. They do work to promote and manage environmental protection in native territories and implement training processes in environmental education in many different communities. Some of the projects that they take part in include “Plastic Asphyxiates the Planet”, a campaign that seeks to encourage work between the rural, urban and indigenous communities of Colombia through the implementation of environmental education tools, and “Moratorium on Fracking”, which was implemented to suspend the exploitation of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits.

Zenu de Bellavista Indigenous Foundation

The Zenu de Bellavista Indigenous Foundation is a non-profit entity committed to developing and promoting projects to aid in the strengthening and improvement of living conditions of the Cabildo Menor Zenu de Bellavista community and its surrounding areas. Through the creation of programs and alliances with different private and public entities, Zenu de Bellavista strives to aid communities that face challenges related to ethnicity, gender, health, sustainable development, education and entrepreneurship.
